Frequently Asked Questions — Landscape Architecture & Garden Design
General Questions
Q. What is the difference between landscape architecture and garden design?
A: Landscape architecture covers large-scale planning, technical details, and integration with architecture and ecology, while garden design often focuses on private residences. At LASD Studio we blend both, offering artful yet precise solutions for any scale.
Q. Do you work on both private and public projects?
A: Yes, we design private gardens, estates, HOAs, cultural institutions, and large-scale ecological restorations.
Q. Where does LASD Studio work?
A: We are based in San Diego, California and Asturias, Spain, and we take on projects worldwide.
Q. Do you meet in person or online?
A: We usually meet with clients via Zoom. It’s simple, efficient, and convenient — especially since many of our clients (and our team) travel frequently. Virtual meetings allow us to connect across time zones and locations without delay, while still providing the same personal attention as an in-person meeting. Site visits are arranged as the project advances, when they are most valuable.
Q. Do you only design luxury projects?
A: While many of our projects are high-end estates and cultural spaces, we also work on meaningful ecological and community-based projects.
Design Process & Timeline
Q. What are the stages of your design process?
A: We begin with site analysis and evaluation, Conceptual hand sketches with main concept, followed by technical drawings, 3D presentation, and construction documents. If project requires Permitting we will take care of it. Each step ensures precision and creativity.
Q. How long does a landscape design project take?
A: Small private gardens may take 4–6 weeks for design, while large estates or public projects can take several months, depending on complexity.
Q. Do you provide 3D renderings before construction?
A: Yes, we use advanced 3D software so clients can experience the project virtually before construction.
Q. Can you phase the project if we are not ready for full construction?
A: Absolutely. We often plan phased implementation so clients can build step by step.
Costs & Contracts
Q. How much does landscape design cost?
A: Each project is unique. Our design fees reflect the scope, complexity, and level of detail required. Private gardens, large estates, HOAs, and public projects each have different needs, and we prepare clear, tailored proposals so you know exactly what to expect before we begin.
Q. What is your deposit and hourly rate?
A: To begin work, we request a deposit that secures your place in our studio schedule. We also offer consulting and additional services on an hourly basis, with rates aligned to the standards of boutique international landscape architecture practices.
Q. Do you charge hourly or fixed fees?
A: We prefer fixed-scope contracts based on exact project size and complexity. This ensures transparency and avoids surprises.
Q. Do you provide ROI calculations?
A: Yes. For HOAs and commercial projects, we calculate return on investment (including water savings, rebates, and long-term maintenance costs).
Q. Do you manage contractors and budgets?
A: Yes, we provide construction oversight, bid analysis, and ensure the project is built as designed.
Technical & Permits
Q. Do you handle permits?
A: Yes, we prepare plans for HOAs, municipalities, and fire departments, including grading, irrigation, and fuel modification plans.
Q. What about local codes and fire regulations?
A: Our drawings include compliance with California Fire Code, RSF Fire Protection District standards, and international equivalents where applicable.
Q. Can you provide stamped plans?
A: Yes, we collaborate with licensed landscape architects and engineers when local regulations require stamped drawings.
Q. Do you work with historical properties?
A: Yes, we design for historically designated estates, balancing preservation with modern ecological needs.
Plants, Ecology & Sustainability
Q. Do you design drought-tolerant landscapes?
A: Yes, all of our work considers water efficiency. We calculate exact annual usage in gallons and integrate rebates where possible.
Q. What is rewilding in landscape design?
A: Rewilding restores ecological systems by planting species that support pollinators, predators, and wildlife. We apply this approach to estates and parks.
Q. Can you integrate organic gardens or edible landscapes?
A: Yes, we often include edible gardens, vineyards, or orchards as part of our projects.
Q. Do you use native plants?
A: Whenever possible. Native plants support biodiversity, pollinators, and long-term resilience.
International & Locations
Q. Do you work outside the U.S. and Spain?
A: Yes, we have designed projects in Europe, North America, and beyond. Our systems adapt to both metric and imperial standards.
Q. Can you design remotely?
A: Yes, we frequently start with digital site data, satellite imagery, and client-provided surveys before visiting in person.
Q. How do you adapt to different climates?
A: We use climate zone research and local nursery knowledge to select plants and materials suited to each environment.
Q. Do you collaborate with local professionals?
A: Yes, we often partner with local contractors, horticulturists, and engineers to ensure seamless execution.
