Landscape Architecture and Garden Design in San Diego & Southern California

Site-specific design shaped by place, climate, and time.

Southern California is not a single landscape. Coastal bluffs, inland valleys, historic neighborhoods, master-planned communities, and private estates each carry their own climate conditions, architectural language, and relationship to land. Meaningful landscape design in this region begins with understanding these differences rather than applying a universal solution.

At LASD Studio, we work across San Diego and Southern California with a site-specific approach. Each landscape is designed in response to its location, architecture, and long-term environmental context, allowing outdoor spaces to feel grounded, coherent, and capable of evolving naturally over time.

A Regional Practice, Designed One Place at a Time

Our work spans a wide range of environments, from coastal communities shaped by wind and salt air to inland estate properties where water, soil health, and long-term land stewardship play a defining role. Rather than repeating templates, each project is approached as a unique system where architecture, ecology, and daily life are designed together.

This philosophy allows landscapes to mature gracefully, support native wildlife and biodiversity, and remain relevant across decades rather than seasons.

San Diego County — Distinct Places, Distinct Landscapes

Within San Diego County, landscape design responds to highly specific local conditions and cultural contexts. Coastal exposure, architectural heritage, daily patterns of use, and long-established neighborhood character all influence how outdoor spaces are shaped. Our work across the county reflects this diversity, with each landscape designed in direct response to its place.

In La Jolla, Torrey Pines and Coronado, we work with coastal estates and architecturally significant residences where land, ocean exposure, and long-term value are closely intertwined.
In the Mission Hills Historic District, landscapes are shaped with sensitivity to heritage and architectural continuity, supporting the character of the neighborhood rather than competing with it.
At Point Loma and Sunset Cliffs, dramatic coastal conditions call for restraint, durability, and a careful relationship with land and horizon.
In Pacific Beach (North) and Crown Point, landscapes are often designed around everyday use, relaxed coastal living, and a close connection between indoor and outdoor space.

Southern California — A Broader Landscape Context

Beyond central San Diego, our work extends into carefully planned residential and estate-oriented communities where long-term thinking and environmental balance play a defining role. These landscapes often require a deeper engagement with water use, soil conditions, and evolving ecological systems.

In Del Mar, Carmel Valley, Encinitas, Cardiff by the Sea and Solana Beach, we design refined residential landscapes shaped by coastal ecology and climate.
Across Carlsbad — La Costa and Aviara, San Clemente, Laguna Beach master-planned environments benefit from water-intelligent design and thoughtful soil restoration strategies.
In Fairbanks Ranch, Bonsall and Rancho Santa Fe, landscapes are often conceived as part of long-term land stewardship on private estate properties.
Within Santaluz, architecture-led landscapes are integrated closely with terrain, climate, and ecological processes, allowing outdoor spaces to evolve naturally over time.

Begin with Place

Each of these locations carries its own architectural language, environmental conditions, and rhythm of daily life. We invite you to explore the area that best reflects your property and landscape context, and to begin with a conversation grounded in place.
