Beach Life & Littoral Gardens
Landscape architecture shaped by daily life, proximity to the coast, and human scale.
Along Southern California’s shoreline, many landscapes are shaped less by monumentality and more by everyday use. In walkable beach communities, the garden becomes an extension of daily life — a place for gathering, movement, rest, and informal rituals tied to climate and proximity to the ocean.
At LASD Studio, Beach Life & Littoral Gardens are designed as lived-in landscapes. These environments prioritize human scale, ease of movement, and a seamless relationship between indoor and outdoor space, while still responding thoughtfully to coastal conditions and long-term performance.
Designing for Everyday Coastal Living
Unlike estate-scale coastal properties, littoral gardens are shaped by rhythm rather than spectacle. Morning light, afternoon shade, prevailing breezes, and patterns of movement inform how space is organized and used.
Design decisions focus on clear circulation between interior and exterior spaces, comfortable zones for daily use, and spatial layouts that support flexibility rather than fixed formality.
These gardens are not designed to impress at a distance, but to support life up close.

Architecture and Indoor–Outdoor Continuity
In beach-oriented neighborhoods, architecture and landscape are often closely intertwined. Outdoor spaces function as extensions of living areas, kitchens, and gathering zones, blurring the boundary between inside and outside.
Landscape architecture supports this continuity through aligned floor levels and materials, consistent spatial language, and planting that frames use rather than obstructs it.
The result is a cohesive environment where landscape and architecture read as one.

Walkable Coastal Communities
In communities such as Pacific Beach (North and Crown Point), Cardiff by the Sea, Encinitas, Solana Beach, Carlsbad, and Long Beach, landscapes are embedded within walkable neighborhoods and active coastal life. Parcels are often smaller, and design must balance privacy with openness, and structure with ease.
These gardens support relaxed coastal living, social interaction, and a close relationship between home, street, and shoreline.
Littoral Gardens as Living Systems
While informal in appearance, Beach Life & Littoral Gardens are not static. Soil health, water efficiency, and plant adaptability are considered as part of an integrated system designed to evolve over time.
LASD Studio approaches these landscapes with the same long-term thinking applied across all project types — allowing gardens to mature, stabilize, and respond naturally to use and environment.

Our studio blends artistic identity, ecological thinking, and architectural precision. Here are a few projects that reflect the spirit behind our work
Scope of Work
Our studio delivers complete landscape architecture services, guiding each project from early concept through detailed design and construction coordination.
Rather than separating services into parts, we approach every landscape as a unified system — where architecture, ecology, materials, water, and experience are designed together.
