Landscape Architecture & Garden Design in San Clemente, Southern California

Where coastal culture, Mediterranean heritage, and contemporary landscape intelligence quietly converge.

San Clemente is a place of long horizons — ocean, light, and time itself move more slowly here. Architecture, landscape, and daily life are deeply intertwined, shaped by coastal winds, Pacific light, and a legacy rooted in Mediterranean ideals brought to Southern California over a century ago.

At LASD Studio, we approach San Clemente landscapes not as decorative settings, but as living, evolving systems — places designed to mature gracefully, respond to climate, and remain relevant for decades rather than seasons.

Our work here is intentionally measured, site-specific, and deeply contextual.

Architecture and Landscape as One Continuous Composition

San Clemente’s architectural identity is layered and nuanced. Spanish Colonial Revival, Mediterranean Revival, early California Ranch houses, refined Mid-Century Modern architecture, and carefully detailed contemporary residences coexist within the same coastal terrain. These styles share a common sensitivity to light, proportion, and the relationship between interior and exterior space.

Our role as landscape architects is not to impose a visual language, but to translate architectural intent into landscape form. Gardens are conceived as continuations of the architecture itself, extending interior spaces outward without interruption, shaping outdoor rooms in response to wind, sun angle, and seasonal rhythms, and using planting compositions that reinforce structure rather than obscure it. Materials are selected for their ability to age gracefully in coastal conditions, developing character and patina over time rather than visual fatigue. Every project begins with architecture, climate, and lifestyle — never with a predefined list of features.

Designing for Coastal Conditions, Longevity, and Restraint

San Clemente’s environment is both generous and demanding. Salt air, coastal winds, hillside soils, water responsibility, and long-term maintenance realities all shape intelligent design decisions from the earliest stages of a project. Successful landscapes here are not forced into place; they are carefully negotiated with the site.

Our approach integrates climate-responsive planting strategies adapted specifically to coastal Southern California, thoughtful water systems that go well beyond minimum regulatory requirements, and soil health as a foundational design element rather than an afterthought. Hardscape and detailing are developed with the same discipline, ensuring that materials weather with dignity and remain appropriate decades into the future. For us, sustainability is not presented as a concept — it is embedded in how landscapes function, mature, and endure over time.

Private Estates, Coastal Properties, and Legacy Projects

Our work in San Clemente is primarily focused on private estates, coastal residences, and long-term property transformations. We collaborate with clients who value depth over speed, discretion over display, and long-range thinking over short-term visual impact.

Projects often involve hillside properties overlooking the Pacific, garden renovations where maturity and refinement are the primary goals, and architect-led new builds that require landscape integration from the earliest conceptual stages. Many landscapes are developed in carefully considered phases, allowing them to evolve naturally while maintaining a clear and coherent long-term vision.

Clients typically come to LASD Studio not in search of a particular style, but for clarity, authorship, and trust — and for landscapes that feel grounded, intentional, and quietly enduring.

Landscapes That Mature with Place and Time

In San Clemente, landscapes are most successful when they are allowed to settle rather than assert themselves. Coastal light, ocean air, and seasonal rhythms naturally soften edges, deepen material character, and allow planting to grow into its role over time. We design with this process in mind, creating outdoor spaces that become increasingly comfortable and cohesive as they mature, rather than requiring constant reinvention. LASD Studio MISSION

Working with LASD Studio

Our work begins with a clear understanding of the site, the architecture, and how outdoor spaces are meant to support everyday life. Early conversations focus on alignment — not only in vision, but in pace and intention. Clients are invited into key design moments, while coordination, technical development, and refinement are handled quietly behind the scenes. The result is a process that feels attentive without being demanding, and a landscape that feels natural to the home, the setting, and the way it is lived in.

Frequently Asked Questions - San Clemente

How early should a landscape architect be involved in a new home or major renovation?

Ideally, landscape architecture begins at the same time as architectural planning. Early involvement allows outdoor spaces, grading, circulation, and planting to be integrated seamlessly with the home rather than adjusted afterward. In coastal environments like San Clemente, early coordination also helps address wind, sun exposure, water strategy, and long-term maintenance from the outset.

Do you work with existing homes as well as new builds?

Many San Clemente projects involve existing homes where the goal is refinement rather than replacement. We often work with properties that already have strong architectural character but require a landscape that feels more settled, cohesive, and aligned with how the home is actually lived in today.

How do you design landscapes that perform well near the ocean?

Salt air, wind, sun exposure, and soil conditions are treated as defining design elements. Plant communities, materials, and spatial enclosure are selected to weather gracefully over time, allowing the landscape to mature naturally rather than requiring constant correction or replacement.

How do you approach coastal conditions such as salt air and wind?

Coastal environments require restraint and specificity. Plant selection, material choice, and detailing are developed with salt exposure, prevailing winds, and long-term weathering in mind. Rather than fighting these conditions, we design landscapes that respond to them naturally and age gracefully over time.

Is sustainability a core part of your work, or an optional layer?

Sustainability is embedded in how we design rather than added as a separate feature. This includes climate-responsive planting, responsible water strategies, soil health, and materials chosen for durability and longevity. The goal is a landscape that performs well environmentally while remaining visually calm and architecturally appropriate.

Do you handle permitting and coordination with local authorities?

When required, we coordinate landscape-related permitting and work closely with architects, engineers, and local jurisdictions. This is handled as part of a structured, quiet process so that clients are not burdened with technical coordination.

What is your typical project scale in San Clemente?

Projects vary, but we typically work on private estates, coastal residences, and long-term property transformations where quality, longevity, and thoughtful integration are priorities. We are not a high-volume studio and take on a limited number of projects to ensure personal involvement and consistency.

How long does the design process usually take?

Each project is different, but thoughtful landscape design is not rushed. Timelines are shaped by site complexity, scope, and coordination needs. We focus on clarity and long-term outcomes rather than speed, allowing landscapes to be designed with intention rather than urgency. Design work can take from 2 months for private residences and from 5 months for Estates, large properties. We encourage to begin working on the design on early stages.

Do you provide construction services as well?

LASD Studio is a landscape architecture and design studio. We focus on design, documentation, and coordination, and collaborate with trusted contractors for implementation. This separation allows us to remain fully aligned with the client’s interests throughout the process. We are working with selected and trusted licensed contractors.
